Collaborations

This week I’ve been blessed to understand the importance of collaborating. From my meeting with another non profit founder all the way to my conversations with other women who are mom’s with tweens. It is so important in life to have a network of supportive people that you can bounce ideas off of or when you just need encouragement.

I’ve created a Little Girls Big Dreams Group on Facebook, it is a private group that is home to any mom who needs to vent, praise, or seek advice about their tween. Mostly though it is a network for prayer because I have no idea how I’m going to last as a mom without it. God places people in your life for a reason, none of us were meant to do this alone. With this group I’d like everyone to feel free to post, and comment, and communicate in the most respectful way possible of course.  Let’s just be there for one another *cue We Are the World*. My network of friends is awesome, some married, some single, some working, some stay at home, ALL valuable to my life in some way. Open up to your peers, everyone is not out to use what you tell them against you. Don’t be afraid to lean on others, this is what sisterhood is all about.

Alvin Ailey: Setting the Stage

Hey dreamers!

For those of you who have daughters who are interested in dance, Alvin Ailey is hosting a special event on February 22, 2018 at the Gem Theater. There are so many great things happening in our city and for our children, we just have to take advantage of them. Meet us at the Gem Theater @7pm as we explore our culture through dance + interactive slides. Little Girls Big Dreams is all about showing young ladies that they can BE anything that want to BE, with hard work + dedication. Ballet is no exception, so if this is a dream you would like to cultivate in your little one, this is the place for you. More information below.

FYI this is a FREE event but please go to the link below and register for the event (its best to do it from a computer.) I truly hope I see you there! It’ll be a great time. Also check out the video below, to get an idea of what you’re in for.

Dream-Chasers Event Details

Hola Dreamers!

I hope this finds you well. So, we are finally having our very first event for Little Girls Big Dreams ( I know right, try to contain your composure). This is our first event,as stated above, and I am so anxious, excited, in awe, and overall oozing with anticipation for what is to come. Below are a few details.

Place: Kansas City Public Library (Plaza Branch)

Secret about me, I love libraries. The Plaza Library is one of my favorites along with the downtown library. I love books, I fly through them like a crazy person and then I’m completely angry with myself for getting finished so fast. I have an intense love affair with books so this is the perfect place for my first event.

Date & Time: August 5, 2017 @ 3:30pm

We have a few things in store, but alas, I cannot reveal it all here. I will, however,  introduce the you lovelies to the panelists, I am so pleased to be working with these ladies in this event. They are true beacons of light and I can’t wait for them to share with the girls how they came to be and what obstacles they may have faced getting there. Get to know them below:

Exercise Your Faith

Happy Sunday!

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”

First off, I have to be completely transparent. I was worried. Worried about the first event for Little Girls Big Dreams. I don’t want it to fail. Simple as that, I have been in fear of failing with this vision since 2012, so much so that I didn’t move on it at all. Here it is 2017 and that same fear is starting to creep in, the only difference this time is prayer.

Each day I’m supposed to call a member of the Dream-Team and say a prayer for LGBD. Today I called my girl and in my prayer I expressed my worry, I asked God to take it from me and to keep me focused on what matters. Let Him take care of tomorrow while I stay present. Sharing that prayer of course brought on an hour long conversation full of confirmation, I am a true believer that nothing happens by mistake and some things were revealed to me within this conversation.

Here I am, with all the tools that I need right here within me. God has placed this vision in me and He is going to help me execute it. Fear is not something that I should allow to stay within me, it is a natural feeling but it is my job to remember that God is in control and there is nothing that I cannot do through Him, and that knowledge alone will alleviate any fear that I may have.

I want to challenge you to get close to God, pray to God, if you have anything you want to succeed at, anything that you are working through, times when things don’t seem to be adding up, hard decisions to make, or just thanking Him for ALL that He’s brought you through. Pray.

That’s all I have for you today, I was going to rave about my excitement about our first event, but I’ll save that one for next time. I wanted to be real and honest about the difficulties that I was having. So whatever it is you’re going through, ask God for help, get a good support system that will keep you lifted and that will remind you of your “Why?” You’ll be glad you did.

Chat with you guys Wednesday!

Do the Work

Good evening Dreamers!

I hope everyone is doing well.  These past two weeks have been a whirlwind for me. So many confirmations, but the main one has been constant and it is “Do the work”. Whatever work is needed to get you to your dreams do that. Nothing is easy, with social media we tend to forget that. As a “follower” all we see of other peoples lives is the good side, we rarely see the blood, sweat, and tears, that it took to get to that point.

Everyone wants these blessings, but they don’t want the bruises.

Don’t dwell too much on what someone else is doing in their life without also working on yours. Put in the time to live your dream and when it gets hard, push through it is extremely worth it. There will be times when nothing seems like its working, no one is supporting your dream, there’s a struggle anytime you try to complete a task…the list goes on and on. My advice to you is to keep pressing, keep pushing, keep working, you were born with a purpose, don’t let the journey to get to it cause you to stop.

#InSpireMe: GirlTrek

Hey Dreamers! Here is some midweek inspiration for you! I try to pull away from a Netflix binge from time to time and find something to watch that will inspire me. Today I perused Ted and this is what I found. So many wonderful people are making a difference in the world, just by being passionate about life, living, giving, caring, and loving.

Something that stood out for me in the video was how women in general take care of everyone but themselves. Husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, the list is endless and women are always the last, by choice.

I am Lakeisha, the daughter of Rita, daughter of Ruthie, daughter of Ella, daughter of Elzora, and  daughter of Ruth.

Ella died at the age of 50 due to a “bad heart” she birthed 12 children, 11 lived.

I never met my great-grandmother, I’ve always wanted to though. She left this place before my mother was even born. I was told she had a bad heart. How can a woman that birthed 12 kids, and start my entire family have a “bad heart”? Self care is so important, self love is important, putting yourself first is important.

“Walking 30 minutes per day can single-handedly decrease 50% of your risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, even Alzheimer and dementia”

Get out there and move ladies, you owe it to yourselves.

Be Present

Good evening dreamers!

Since I’ve started actively working on LGBD I have had my face in my phone, laptop, or the clouds, constantly. At any given moment I’m either searching for inspirational photos online, sending out emails, or daydreaming about what this can grow into. All of these are good things, this is my baby, my newborn baby, so it needs all of my attention, right? Every minute of everyday counts, so naturally I will do all that I can to make sure its beautiful.

This past weekend, however, I decided that I would be present. I would enjoy my friends and family, I would take a moment to be grateful, and not worry so much about LGBD and it was the one of the best things I’ve done since I started. I was able to laugh all night with friends, eat great food, and dance the night away without worrying about photo ops, or quotes, or color palettes, etc etc. I know that a lot of us become enthralled in our projects, creatives have this need to feel inspired, this need to always be doing something, but if we don’t take some time out to look at the blessings around us we may miss the very inspiration we are searching so diligently for.

Cultivating your dreams is a journey, I acknowledge that it takes hard work mixed with a few tears, but I also believe that when ordered by God, things seem to fall into place. The journey doesn’t seem as lonely when you constantly have a guide telling you where to go, and for some people this might not be God, you may attribute it to the universe or that little voice inside, either way sometimes we need to quiet our minds and just be led. Take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come thus far, so that you can appreciate the journey ahead.
